OUR THIRD 2022 CONCERT - SATURDAY 1ST OCTOBER

Our third and final concert of 2022 was again in St Margaret's Church, Warnham, continuing our series of hour-long concerts, with tickets still only £10 and an early start time of 5pm to help those who don't like to drive in the dark or who have other exciting things to do in the evening!

The hour long programme is a re-imagining of a pilgrimage to The Holy Land made by the 15th century German monk Felix Fabri. He actually made two pilgrimages and on both occasions kept very detailed and descriptive records of everything he did and saw. The nuns at a nearby convent back in Germany could not make the trip themselves but followed his pilgrimage ‘virtually’, incorporating his writings in their daily devotions. We can perhaps relate to this when we had to resort to travel programmes on the television in order to escape during lockdown!

The music in our concert is inspired by the idea of pilgrimage, by the various sacred musical works mentioned in his diary and also by the places he visited. Apart from Mozart’s  Ave Maria  the music is a mixture of renaissance polyphony and plainchant. We will also read extracts from his writings.

So, book the date and note the time of 5pm. There is no interval so mingling can be kept to a minimum if desired. The church has plenty of room for socially distancing.

Tickets are £10 with a free programme which will keep box office transactions quick and smooth. Contact cantilena.info@gmail.com or buy them at the door.

We hope that you will take this opportunity to come and hear  lovely music and singing as we go on our virtual pilgrimage!

CANDLEMAS CONCERT 2022

After a long break we were able to put on a concert. Our last one before covid hit was our much-loved Candlemas Concert in 2020 so it was appropriate that we started up again by celebrating Candlemas 2022 with our customary look back at the Christmas season.

So, on Saturday 29th January we performed an hour long programme at 3pm (to allow travel in the daylight) in St Margaret's Church, Warnham to a very appreciative and sizeable audience who were obviously as delighted as we were to get back to participating in live music.

Cantilena

Summer 2021 - What we have been doing recently.....

It might look as if the answer is 'not much' but we have managed to keep going in our various musical fields. Singing practice has gone on, teaching has happened and new editions made.

We have had some socially distanced rehearsals and a concert was booked for July 17th 2021. However, we have decided to postpone it till the autumn, as the various guidelines and hoops we needed to jump through were going to take the pleasure out of it!

The programme we've been working on has taken us on musical travels around Europe and across the pond, so even if we can't actually go to these places we have experienced some of their history and culture. Instead of our concert we will have a sing through and a picnic and hope to be back to welcoming you the audience later this year!
